Introduction:
In the dynamic landscape of payroll management, ensuring accuracy and consistency
across systems is paramount. A Data Engineer from our team, was selected
to participate in this project aimed at reconciling payroll data from two distinct systems,
leveraging Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Looker to streamline the process and
guarantee precision in transition.
Background:
The project stemmed from the fact that the client had two different payroll systems:
one was an old system based on Cobalt, which had been in use for more than three
decades, and the other was a recently introduced system from a third-party provider.
The goal was straightforward: to develop a detailed dashboard that could compare and
combine data from both systems, guaranteeing accurate and smooth payroll
processing.
Challenges:
Navigating the complexities of payroll data proved to be a formidable challenge. With
each employee’s case scenario entailing unique settings, including tax variations
based on location and personal circumstances, the project encountered over a
hundred distinct tables delineating deductions, retentions, gross and net payments,
among others.
Solution:
The solution encompassed a multifaceted approach leveraging GCP and Looker. Daily
data extraction from both systems was facilitated through GCP, with Dataflow
orchestrating the load process into Big Query. Python programming facilitated
seamless data pipeline execution. The subsequent challenge lay in harmonizing the
disparate schemas of the two systems, culminating in the creation of a unified data
model conducive to Looker integration.
Implementation:
The implementation phase entailed meticulous data modeling within BigQuery to establish a coherent foundation for Looker visualization. By homologating the schemas
of both systems, a singular, comprehensive dataset was generated, paving the way for
the development of a dynamic Looker dashboard. The dashboard served as a visual
representation of payroll data, facilitating the identification of discrepancies and
enabling informed decision-making.
Outcome:
The successful execution of the project heralded a milestone in payroll management
for the client. By meticulously reconciling data from the legacy system with the new
third-party provider system, the company achieved unparalleled accuracy and
compliance in payroll reporting. The transition from System 1 to System 2 was
seamless, with every penny meticulously reconciled, instilling confidence in the payroll
management process and ensuring a smooth transition for all stakeholders.
